1Position the pressure cuff
The cuff should be placed on the upper arm so that the lower edge is 2-3cm above bend of the elbow. The label on the cuff must be placed on the artery. You can perform the measurement either sitting or lying down. Always make sure that the cuff is on a level with your heart. Turn the cuff so that the stethoscope diaphragm (sound head) is on fire inside of the arm just above the elbow.
2Inflate the cuff
Insert the earpieces of the stethoscope and close the valve on the bulb Inflate the cuff by repeatedly squeezing the bulb with your right hand. Listen to the pulse beat whilst inflating the cuff. Watch the gauge, when you can no longer hear the pulse beat, raise the pressure an additional 30mmHg.
3Slowly deflate the cuff
Slowly open the valve by turning counter clockwise so that the pressure drops 2-3mmHg with each beat of your heart.
4Systolic pressure
After opening the valve, listen carefully for a pulse beat and watch the needle. The moment you hear the first pulse beat, please note the reading (mmHg) on the gauge. This is your systolic (upper) blood pressure.
5 Diastolic pressure
Allow the pressure to continue dropping. At the exact point when you can no longer hear the pulse beat, read tile gauge, this is your diastolic (lower) blood pressure reading.
Fully open the valve
